All right, we're going through the book of Mark, the gospel of Mark, so open it up. We're going through, chapter by chapter, verse by verse, and we have come to chapter 3, and we are going to get through the end of chapter 3 today. And we have come to a topic that is familiar to many people, and it's the subject and topic of the unforgivable sin. Sometimes it's called the unpardonable sin. And yet, while it's maybe a familiar topic, I think if you would ask around, people in your life, people where you work, people in your family, there may be very few people who can tell you and explain to you what exactly the unforgivable sin or unpardonable sin really is.

Now, there are many people who would probably give you an idea or they would tell you, ''This is what I think the unforgivable sin is.'' For instance, there are many people who think murder is the unforgivable sin. That is, if you take the life of an innocent person, the life of someone that God gave to them, that God will not forgive you. The problem with that is then you have to look at the life of Moses, and the life of David, and the life of Paul who was Saul, and it is undeniable that they are in heaven. They have been forgiven. So that doesn't quite work.

There are other people who believe that adultery is the unforgivable sin. That is, they have not taken their vows seriously, and therefore, God says, you have broken a promise, and I'm not going to forgive you. Adultery is the unforgivable sin. The problem with that is you have King David, who was both a murderer and an adulterer, and yet, he joyously and exuberantly celebrated the joy of forgiveness in both Psalm 32 and Psalm 51. And so, it is obvious from scripture that adultery is not even close to the unforgivable sin.
