The Stormy North Side of Christ
The Lordship of Christ
Richard Bradley
Matthew 4:8-10
In case you're wondering where the title for this sermon came from, this is something the Puritans used to say about the Lordship of Christ. The idea was that almost everything about Jesus and our relationship with Him is meant to comfort us. For instance, as born again believers we know that we're on your way to heaven. That's pretty comforting to me as I'm sure it is to you. No matter what this world throws at us heaven is still our ultimate destination!
So, what about this north side business? Well, the north side is the stormy side. That's the place where the winds of struggle blow. This is the place of our commitment to the Lordship of Christ and the place where He may well ask of us difficult things. As believers most, if not all, of our spiritual struggles have something to do with the depths or level of our commitment to the Lordship of Christ.
Having trouble attending worship? A commitment to the Lordship of Christ will take care of that. Having trouble with tithing? A commitment to the Lordship of Christ will take care of that. Having trouble getting along with others over silly and petty differences? A commitment to the Lordship of Christ will take care of that. If we are comfortable with ourselves as we are it's pretty likely we need to come over to the ''stormy north side of Christ!''
Matthew 4:8-10
8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, ''All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.'' 10 Then Jesus said to him, ''Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.'''
