Have you ever overlooked an appointment? I'm not asking have you ever missed an appointment; but rather, have you ever overlooked an appointment! It made it to your calendar, perhaps even to your cell phone, but like Mary and Joseph who forgot twelve-year-old Jesus back in Jerusalem, you forgot about it!
While pastoring in Odessa, Texas I had an appointment on my calendar one Saturday morning that I had committed to and even planned for; but somehow overlooked it: a wedding!!!
I'll never forgot that Saturday morning!! I slept in that morning, enjoyed a couple cups of coffee, a nice breakfast, read a little scripture, reviewed my sermon manuscript for the next day then suddenly my phone rang.
I casually reached for it and answered, ''Good morning,'' not knowing who was going to be on the other end of the call.
There was not the usual greeting you'd expect from a caller, especially on Saturday morning. No ''good morning.'' No ''how are you today?'' No ''happy Saturday morning.'' This was a conversation that was very brief and pointed like the prayer of Peter when he began sinking into the Sea of Galilee after having walked on it: ''Lord, save me!'' (Matt 14.30). Our conversation went something like this:
The man asked, ''Is this Dr. Easley?''
I said, ''Yes, it is.''
He then asked, ''Are you coming?''
I asked ''Coming where?''
He said, ''To the wedding.''
Those three words, ''to the wedding,'' echoed in my mind like standing at the Grand Canyon and saying, ''Hello ... Hello ... Hello.'' But rather than a simple ''Hello .. Hello ... Hello'' it was ''to the wedding ... to the wedding ... to the wedding.''
I'm thinking, ''to the wedding? It's Saturday morning? There was no rehearsal last night. Who does a wedding on Saturday morning, especially this Saturday morning?'' Then WAM!!! Like having a load of br ...
