Introduction: Mordecai also gave him (Hathach) a copy of the written decree issued in Susa ordering their destruction, so that Hathach might show it to Esther, explain it to her, and command her to approach the king, implore his favor, and plead with him personally for her people. Hathach came and repeated Mordecai's response to Esther.

Esther spoke to Hathach and commanded him to tell Mordecai, ''All the royal officials and the people of the royal provinces know that one law applies to every man or woman who approaches the king in the inner courtyard and who has not been summoned-the death penalty-unless the king extends the gold scepter, allowing that person to live. I have not been summoned to appear before the king for the last thirty days.'' Esther's response was reported to Mordecai, (Esther 4:8-12).

In the story of Esther, we find this young beautiful Jewish woman chosen to be the queen of the powerful King Xerxes in Persia. She learns here from her uncle of a plot to kill him and many Jews as well. Her uncle pleads with her to go to the king, her husband and implores the king's favor for them. Esther responds, however, that she cannot go uninvited into the throne room of Xerxes, for no one can enter his presence and live.

You see, regardless of time or circumstance, one does not simply go into the chamber of power at one's pleasure. Just as we wouldn't stroll up to Buckingham Palace and expect to be let in or walk up to the White House and demand a hearing in the Oval Office, this inherent recognition of the power and the necessity of being invited runs throughout us all. And if we know this about human places of power, how much more concerning the throne room of God.
