Introduction: A couple of months ago I saw the show ''Fixer Upper'' relaunched on a new streaming service. I remember years ago when it first debuted and how it became much more than just another renovation television show. What I really think made the show become a phenomenon was the charming relationship of Chip and Joanna Gaines and then just the brilliant creativity and design of Joanna. Suddenly, every woman in America dreamed of being the next Joanna Gaines and next thing you know it, the family had built their Magnolia brand into an empire. A number of years ago, my wife even went down to Waco to run in the inaugural Magnolia Marathon. Oooo! I described the trip for her as being like the American Christian pilgrimage to Mecca. She did not find that as funny as I did.

But, in all seriousness, you've got to give the Gaines' credit for the total rehab job they've done not just on the houses they work on, but on the city of Waco itself. You see, if you're over 35 you likely know Waco, TX for another reason. Apologies to our Texans in the church who probably could say all sorts of lovely things about the city, but at least for those of us that grew up outside the region we really first learned of the existence of a place called Waco (pronounced Way-Koh not Wacko) in 1993.

A man named David Koresh had become a leader of a cult called the Branch Davidians. In this cult he claimed to be a messiah who would bring about the restoration of the Davidic covenant of Israel. Correspondingly, he identified 24 women to become his wives who were supposed to have 24 children. These twenty-four children were supposed to be the twenty-four elders we read of last time in Revelation 4 who would stand around the throne of God. Some of the wives were minors, however, and there were all sorts of allegations of child abuse and sexual abuse, which led to an attempted FBI sieg ...
