Almost but Lost
Rex Yancey
Acts 26:22-29
Several years ago there was a man by the name of William Hyatt. He was a 62-year-old miner who was found with his face and hands buried in the hot searing desert sand of the Mojave Desert.
Some investigators reconstructed the tragedy and they found that Hyatt's car had broken down in the desert. He walked for 22 miles across those burning sands. When they found him face down, hands down in the sand, right up on the next sand dune and over, a half mile away, were the Saratoga Springs that could have saved him. He was almost there but he did not make it.
So near the door
And the door stood wide
Close to the gate but not inside
Near to the fold yet not within
Almost resolved to give up sin
Almost persuaded
But count the cost
Almost a Christian
But lost
Today I want us to look at one of the most dramatic scenes in the Word of God. It is the scene where the great preacher Paul is standing before King Agrippa, his wife Bernice, and a man named Festus.
Paul was in trouble with the Jews because he was preaching a gospel contrary to their beliefs. They hated him so much they would have killed him if they could have gotten the opportunity.
-Festus said to Paul, ''Paul, you are beside thyself. Paul you are going crazy. Paul, you're insane.''
-Isn't it funny how faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is insanity? Other people can be fervent in whatever they do and not be considered insane. People go nuts over sports, pleasures, money and other things, and yet those who are excited about Jesus and eternal life, heaven and hell, somehow are considered to be a little off base.
If this sermon were a movie it would not be a comedy. It would be a tragedy. It would be a tragedy of almost being a Christian.
There are many tragedies in the Bible. The children of Israel were almost in the Promised Land but wandered for 40 years.
The Rich young ruler was ''not far from the Kingdom of God.'' Close ...
