Mark 1:1-8
Let's open our Bibles to the gospel of Mark - Mark chapter 1. Today we're looking at God's very first Baptist preacher. And like most Baptist preachers, this guy is weird.
You've probably heard the name Florence Chadwick? Florence Chadwick was a phenomenal swimmer, all the way back when she was a little girl. At the age of 10 she became the youngest person to ever swim across the mouth of the Bay of San Diego, which is six miles. She was 10 years old. When she was 31, she swam the entire English Channel, which spans from England to France. She swam 14 consecutive hours. I can sleep maybe that long, but swim?
When she was 52, she encountered her greatest challenge. She decided that she was going to swim the cold, choppy Pacific waters between Catalina Island and the California coastline. That's 26 grueling, agonizing miles. Even the greatest swimmers with tremendous skill say that is one of the hardest swims you can imagine. About 13 hours into her swim, fog envelops her. It's everywhere. She has a crew there, some are protecting her from sharks, others to encourage her, or pull her from the water if she needs help. She's all around, and she's looking out, she says she couldn't see even one foot in front of her. So with this fog, as she's swimming along, she becomes discouraged, she becomes disoriented, and before long, she's thinking, ''I don't think I can make it.''
She cries out, ''Mom, I think I'm done.'' But she swims for another hour in that, and finally she says, ''Pull me out of the water.'' As they sat in the boat and the fog began to clear, they realized that she was less than a mile from the shoreline. In an interview the next day, she said that ''I wasn't defeated by fatigue; I was defeated by the fog. All that I could see was fog. I couldn't see anything else.'' And she said these profound words: ''I think if I could have seen the shore, I would have ...
