When I was in the 7th grade, I lived in a tiny little town called Jacksonville, TX and I thought I was the greatest Middle School football player in the world... But then my family moved us across the state to a mid-sized West Texas town called, Odessa.

In Odessa, football was king. In fact, they made a movie about my High School football team called, Friday Night Lights, and if you've seen that movie, you understand how football-crazy the people are in my hometown.

I'll never forget my first day of football practice in the 8th grade. I introduced myself to the coach and when he asked me what position I played, I told him-''Quarterback.'' He looked at me without batting an eye and said, ''I already have a quarterback. Don't expect to play very much this year.''

That wasn't what I wanted to hear that day, but I decided that I was going to work hard and prove to him that I could play.

Practices in Odessa were tough. We started out with 2-a-days and then started practicing 3 times a day... many times with the temperature far above 100 degrees.

It was hot... It was terrible... but what was even worse than practice... was game day.

On game day, I would put on my uniform ... put on my cleats and my helmet... and I'd look like part of the team... but the truth is, I spent the majority of weekends that season, standing on the sidelines.

I didn't even feel like part of the team. I felt like a spectator. The only difference between the fans and me was-I was wearing a jersey and had a better view of the game.

I'll be honest... that was a frustrating season... (attending all the practices and enduring all the pain)... and in my frustration, I'll never forget thinking (as an 8th grade boy)... ''I've sacrificed way too much to simply stand on the sidelines!''
