OUTLINE:
How To Deal with Difficult People...
1. AVOID THEM
2. BLESS THEM
3. TEACH THEM
4. RELEASE THEM
This week, I was reminded of the old 90s movie, What About Bob? Have you seen it? Bill Murray, who plays the role of Bob, is a germaphobe and has tons of hang-ups. He seeks counsel from Richard Dreyfuss, who plays the role of Dr. Leo Marvin. Dr. Marvin has just released his new book, Baby Steps, and recently took Bob as a new client. But, when Dr. Marvin decides to go on vacation, Bob decides he needs therapy, so he starts to track down Dr. Marvin on vacation. The entire movie outlines how Dr. Marvin is trying to rid Bob from his vacation. Unexpectedly, Dr. Marvin's family falls in love with Bob, and they want him to stay. By the end of the movie, Dr. Marvin has become crazy, and Bob, the one who was needing therapy, appears normal!
I thought about this movie because today we are talking about ''people'' triggers. How do we deal with difficult people? We all have a Bob in our lives. Everybody has somebody who pushes their buttons, someone who forces them to the max.
I had a Bob in my life; his name was Patrick. A few years ago, Gena and I were beginning a new church in the Dallas area, and we had a church member named Patrick. Patrick was on our launch team for the new church, and he was unlike any church member I had ever known before. If we had a 6:00 PM event at our house, Patrick would show up at 3:00 PM, unannounced. Patrick would open the front door and let himself in, and he would take off his shoes, lie on the couch, eat from our fridge, drink our sodas, and take over our home. Gena said, ''Ryan, this is not okay.'' And I'm like, ''Well, baby, he's doing so many great things for the church.'' She was like, ''No.'' And I'm like, ''All right.''
We went into lockdown mode every Wednesday at 3:00 PM when we knew Patrick was coming. We would lock all the doors, ...
