On a visit to America, Princess Diana went into a department store and saw a red and black polka-dot silk scarf. ''This is very smart looking,'' she said to an aide. It was stylish and yet unique. She loved the look of the fabric. She then instructed her aide to buy the $8.00 item. Immediately after Diana's purchase, some men from the British Embassy rushed up to the counter to buy a scarf just like it. Presumably for their wives. The wife of a store executive also bought one for her daughter, noting, ''She would be thrilled to have a scarf like Princess Diana.''

The purchase of that scarf became known in various circles and media. Later, when the store was reopened to the public, a swarm of women raced to the red and black polka-dot scarves, as if guided by radar. They sold out of that scarf in every store they had and ultimately had to backorder hundreds and hundreds of those scarves. These persons that purchased those scarves did so because of following the trendy, fashionable path of Princess Diana.
Oh, that we would be as quick to take our cues from the Lord or from those who seem to really embrace justice, fairness, harmony, equity, respect, inclusiveness. How spiritually enriched would we be if we studied Christ's words and actions and carefully considered His values and choices rather than looking to the world for directions? We must remain free from the deception of those who may be in power or empowered but have values and trends that seem to revert to an era we really should not be proud of. We must choose to follow our divine guide, a moral code that has some respect for mankind, some compassion for the poor, and some respect for marginalized persons.

You are either leaving your mark on the world, or the world is leaving its mark on us.
