Matthew 26:1-2
''When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, ''As you know, the Passover is two days away--and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.'' Matthew 26:1-2
REPRESENTING RELIGION - Caiaphas, the High Priest of Judaism
''Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. ''What are we accomplishing?'' they asked. ''Here is this man performing many miraculous signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.'' Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, ''You know nothing at all! You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.'' He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one. So from that day on they plotted to take his life.'' John 11:47-53
Religion is man's attempt to REACH UP to GOD
''Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: ''Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious.'' Acts 17:22
Religion involves man's EFFORTS to GET RIGHT with GOD
''I was one of the most religious Jews of my own age, and I tried as hard as possible to follow all the old traditions of my religion. Galatians 1:14
Religion emphasizes what we must do to STAY RIGHT with God.
''The people of Israel love their rituals of sacrifice, but to me their sacrifices are all meaningless!''. Hosea 8:13
Religion gives us an EMPTY HOPE for PEACE with God.
''Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.'' Hebrews 10:11
