Isaiah 9:2, 6-7
''The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned...For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon his shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. '' Isaiah 9:2, 6-7 (NIV)
(This morning we are beginning a new Sermon Series for this Christmas season...Hope Has A Name...Hope is an interesting word... Webster's Dictionary defines hope as ''to want something to happen or be true; i.e. 'hoping for the best'''. We hope for a lot of things, hope for success, hope for happiness, hope for safety, for health, for wealth...but what we really mean when we use the word hope is wish...hope has a much deeper and richer meaning...the word HOPE in the Bible means ''Expectation and anticipation of good based on our confidence in the character and love of God.'' This Christmas season let's explore the promise of the Hope we have that started one day in Bethlehem...)
Our Hope has a PURPOSE
''The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned...''
(The prophet tells us that God has a clear purpose for His creation, notice these 2 things)
Our Hope leads us from DARKNESS to LIGHT
(The Bible is very clear about this, without God in our life we are in darkness, we cannot see clearly. Once Jesus comes into our heart, He turns the light on...things make sense.)
Our Hope releases us from DEATH and gives us NEW LIFE
