''...We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness...And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.'' (From the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776)
(On July 4th, 1776 the Continental Congress of the 13 American colonies went public with a draft proclaiming that they were no longer a part of the English Commonwealth and proclaimed themselves to be totally free as a new nation. This document was signed by 56 men who basically signed their death warrant as this was considered treason which the sentence was death. Even as they were meeting in Philadelphia and approving this document British Warships filled with British soldiers were arriving in New York Harbor. These men believed that they had the God-given right to live free and were willing to put their lives on the line for that freedom. As we celebrate our countries 4th of July this Wednesday I thought it might be appropriate for us to consider a couple of questions ourselves. 1) Are there any truths in our life that we hold to be ''self-evident''? 2) How can we proclaim what we believe to be ''self-evident'' truths? 3) Is there anything we believe in so strongly that we would be willing to die for it? Important questions for us as followers of Jesus Christ...LETS PRAY)
