Romans 4:13-25

Open your bibles to Romans 4. The great pastor of yesteryear, Charles H. Spurgeon, made this insightful statement:

''DISCERNMENT is NOT knowing the difference between RIGHT and WRONG. It is knowing the difference between RIGHT and ALMOST RIGHT.''

One of the main reasons we have made the commitment to teach and keep reteaching what the bible says the gospel of Jesus Christ truly is is because we can't afford to get it wrong. The cost is just far too high. If we get the gospel wrong, it doesn't matter what else we get right. When it comes to the gospel, we've got to be able to discern between what is right and what is almost right. As you know, a half-truth is a whole lie.

I've entitled this morning's message Salvation 101 because the apostle Paul, in Romans 4, explains how God rescues sinners, forgives their sin, declares them righteous in His eyes, changes their eternal destination, and welcomes people into His forever family.

Chapter 4 of Romans is Paul's explanation of what it means to be justified by God through faith in Jesus Christ. The Jews thought a person was justified and made right in God's sight by obeying the Law of God. But Paul says, 'No. Salvation is not obtained by any good works or righteous deeds you have done. The Law was not given by God to save anyone, but to condemn everyone. The Law can only reveal sin; it cannot remove it.'

In Romans 4, Paul explains that the salvation of God is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. That's as simple and as straightforward as you can get it. The salvation of God is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

Let's read Romans 4:13-25 then I'll unpack that phrase down for us a little bit.

Salvation for Every Person Is...

1. By GRACE Alone. (I'm not going to spend a ton of time on this because this was last week's message.)
