Open your bibles to Romans 7. Robert Lewis Stevenson wrote a book in 1886 that has deep roots in American culture. You've probably heard of it. It's called the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Even if you didn't read the book, you probably know the gist of the story. A medical doctor named Dr. Henry Jekyll developed a potion that let him become another man, Mr. Edward Hyde. Dr. Jekyll himself was a very nice, compassionate, even-tempered man. On the other hand, the person he turned into, Mr. Hyde, was a cruel, cold-blooded killer. The story revolves around this battle between two different characters fighting for sole control of one body. 

Someone asked Robert Lewis Stevenson, ''Where did you get your inspiration for your characters?'' Stevenson, who was raised in a strict Presbyterian home, said, ''I looked inside myself. I find there's always a struggle with the beast that lives within me.'' While Stevenson's story may be fiction, the foundational truth it is born out of is not.

Romans 7 is Paul's Christian version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Within this chapter, Paul describes the internal battle every genuine believer faces on a regular basis. It's a war between two natures that dwell within one body.

In Romans 6, we learned last week that we're all natural-born sinners. We are born with a sinful nature. We're not sinners because we sin. We sin because we're sinners. We are slaves to sin and must obey our master.

The good news of the gospel is that Jesus died for our sin, absorbing our penalty of death, and He rose from the grave defeating death. Jesus' cross fulfilled the punishment for our sin. Jesus' resurrection defeated the result of our sin which was death. Here's the struggle: When we get a new nature and a new master, our old nature/master doesn't leave. It is defanged and defeated, but it's not totally dead. It will not win the ultimate war, but it still trie ...
