Romans 2:1-16
Open your bibles to Romans 2. Most of you know that I'm NOT a fan of Joel Osteen. It's not because of his pearly white smile. I'm not anti-smile. It's not because he's an ultra-positive person or wants people to know about the blessings of God for His people. Again, I'm not against being positive or being blessed. What makes Joel Osteen's consistent message so deceptively dangerous is that he refuses to acknowledge and teach the whole truth. He doesn't make obvious that the good news of God confronts the bad news of man. You see, if all you have is good news, you really don't have good news, you just have news. What makes good news good is when it is compared to and contrasted to bad news. Bad news is the black velvet background of good news.
For example, here is a quote from Mr. Osteen that kind of gets to the heart of what I mean.
''In dealing with people for several years, thousands of people, one thing I can tell you is that 99.9% of people are not bad people. They make poor choices, but deep down, they've got a good heart.''
I want to believe that don't you? I really do. In fact, if I didn't believe the Bible, I would believe that. The only problem with that statement is that it's not true. The reason it's not true isn't because I don't agree with it. What I think is irrelevant. It's not true because God, who is the standard and declarer of truth, says it's not true. This is what God says about people.
Jeremiah 17:9: ''The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked.''
Romans 3:10: ''None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.''
God says the very opposite of what Joel says.
Joel BELIEVES 99.0% of people have a good heart.
God KNOWS 100% of people have a corrupt heart.
