Open your bibles to Romans 2. Growing up, I had a friend who had a pretty good backyard to play sports in. I spent quite a bit of time there. Periodically, my friend's mom would yell out to the backyard from a small window wanting him to come inside and do something that she had already told him to do (clean up his room, put away his clothes, take care of the dog, etc.) Most of the time, however, he was less than compliant, so she'd threaten him with all kinds of things. She'd say, 'You better get in here right now and clean your room like I told you, or I'm gonna spank you so hard you're not gonna be able to sit down for a week.' This was back in the days when our parents applied the board of education to the seat of learning quite often, if you know what I mean. Or, she'd say, 'If you don't get in here and do what I tell you, you're going to be grounded so long they'll have to postpone your honeymoon.'' Since we were in middle school, that seemed pretty much like a life sentence to me. She had all kinds punishments and restrictions she threatened to impose on him if he didn't respond obediently.
You know what my friend did when his mom started threatening him with consequences if he didn't comply? Nothing. I mean, he barely even blinked. It was as if he didn't hear her at all. But I know he heard her because every once in a while, when he'd get really annoyed with her demands, he'd yell back, 'Mom, what's your problem? Can't you see I'm busy right now? I'll do it when we're finished.' I'm sure I stood there with my mouth wide open, both stunned and scared. I would say, 'Man, are you crazy? Do you have a death wish or something? Just go do what she wants. I'll wait for you.' He'd say, 'Nah, she says that stuff all the time and never follows through. She's bluffing.'
