Open your Bibles to Romans 3. I want you to imagine that standing next to me is Shaquille O'Neal. Shaq, as he's called, is over 7 ft tall and weighs over 400 pounds. I'm 5'9'' and weigh none of your business. But it's much less than 400 pounds. There's no doubt, if I compared myself to him, I would feel really, really small. How do you think I'd look in comparison to Shaq from your perspective in your chair? You'd laugh because I'd look so ridiculous next to him. He would dwarf me.

But what if someone saw Shaq and me standing side by side from an airplane? There'd be no noticeable difference, right? We'd look essentially the same. We'd both look like tiny little ants. Perspective and vantage point are everything, right?

Now, let's say Shaq's height and my height represented the level of our personal goodness based on the number of good things we did in life. Well, no doubt by every comparison from people around us, Shaq would literally be 'head and shoulders' better than me. But what if then we were compared, not by a person in a plane looking down on us from 30,000 ft in the sky, but by a perfect God looking down on us as He sits on the throne in heaven? Do you know how God would see us in comparison to one another? In our text today in Romans 3, Paul says that God would look at the two of us and our levels of human goodness, and says, 'I see no difference. In My eyes, you are in the same spiritual condition and situation.' Even though every person would say, 'But God, it's so obvious Shaq is a better person. Look at all the good things he's done in comparison to Bob. It's not even close. How in the world can you say, 'They look the same to Me?'

How is it that people have determined they are basically good? They measure themselves against lives of others, and they are always able to find people worse than themselves. ''I know I'm no saint, but I'm not as bad ...
