A few years ago, ABC Primetime did a one hour special about a professor at Carnegie Mellon University whose name is Randy Pausch. The husband and father of 3 created a media firestorm when a lecture he presented went ''viral'' on YouTube. In fact, by last count there were nearly 17 million views, amazing, in part, because the video is over one hour long.

You see, the ''Last Lecture'' as it is called is an annual tradition at Carnegie Mellon. It is a time where a beloved professor gives a speech or lecture with the idea, ''What if this was my very last lecture?''

But what many didn't know when they showed up for the ''Last Lecture'' is that for Randy Pausch it would be. Randy had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and at the time of his presentation believed he only had about 3 months to live.

He kept a large audience spell-bound with humor and insight gained over a lifetime of learning. Realizing he would be sharing such thoughts for the LAST time, Randy Pausch poured his heart and soul into that lecture. At the very end, he provided a little twist.

75 minutes into this presentation, he concluded abruptly by saying, ''This talk is not for you. It's for my kids.'' That statement riveted me when I heard it.

What would I say to my kids? Why?
What would I say if it were my last sermon?

By the way, it may be...none of us is promised another day, hour, minute, another breath...So as one year ends and a new one is about to begin, today's question is simple, ''What would your last words to your family be?''
