Revelation 1:1-8
Intro/Attention
Tonight is a night that many of you have been waiting for. We begin our study of the book of Revelation. It's a study that I have cleverly titled, The Book of Revelation. I know you're impressed by my creativity. I did, however, add a subtitle: unveiling the end times in our time. Find Revelation 1:1-8 and that's where we will begin tonight. The subject for our study this evening is, The Beginning of the End.
Can I make a very important statement before we embark upon this journey? I know many of you have questions about this book. Sadly, I won't be able to answer all of your questions. I know others of you have done in depth studies on this book. Sadly, these sermons will not be as in depth as some of the studies you've done. My goal through this series is simple: to help us better understand the ''words of this prophecy'' and to draw us closer to Jesus. It's really that simple.
My goal in this series is to study the text of scripture, explain it the best we can understand, and apply it to our daily lives. That means we won't get bogged down with every single tangent or rabbit trail that others may encounter. These sermons will not be like reading a commentary. If you want to read a commentary on the book Revelation, I have many that I can recommend.
And before I continue, can I just handle something that is a bit of a pet peeve for me? The last book in the Bible is entitled, Revelation, it is not plural, ''Revelations.'' It is The Revelation of Jesus Christ to John. In fact, this is how the book titles itself in the very first phrase.
While the Revelation contains many complex concepts, there is a very simple premise behind this book: Jesus is coming again. He is the Lord of life, the Lord of all, and He is on the throne of the universe. Jesus holds history in His hands.
*We need the assurance of His return now more than ever. We can s ...
