Intro/Attention

Tonight, we continue our study of the book of Revelation. I told you in our last message that the book can be divided into three sections. The outline for the book is found in Revelation 1:19 where Jesus tells John, ''Write therefore the things that you have seen, those that are and those that are to take place after this.'' (ON SCREEN)

The ''things that you have seen'' are represented by the things that are past. That was the vision John received of the risen and glorified Christ. The ''[things] that are'' refer to the ''seven churches'' John was to deliver this letter to. Those are considered present things. And ''those that are to take place after this'' refers to things of the future; prophetic things.

Today, we begin to study ''those [things] that are.'' In other words, we study the ''seven churches'' mentioned in Revelation 1:11 and referred to through Revelation 2 and 3.

Some people believe these were literal churches that also represented different ages or stages of church history. They examine each church and apply it to the church after the apostles, in the midst of persecution, or suffering from compromise. They see each phase of church history from the close of the apostolic age until now.

While that may be hard to prove, it is clear that each of the seven churches addressed in Revelation 2-3 were actual churches that existed when John wrote. And it's clear that each of these seven churches represent the types of churches we find throughout the entire church age and even still today.

As we look at these individual letters to the seven churches, we'll see a regular pattern:

First, each letter is addressed ''to the angel'' of the church.

Second, Jesus announces what He has to say and describes Himself in terms of the vision John had of Jesus in chapter 1.

Third, Jesus tells the church that He knows them, and He ...
