Intro/Attention

As we continue our study in the Book of Revelation, we come to the third of the ''seven churches'' in Revelation 2-3. Tonight, we see the church in ''Pergamum'' and learn what happens When A Church Remains Persistent. READ TEXT

If you'll remember, we first saw the church at ''Ephesus'' and considered what happens When a Church Loses its Passion. This was the church that ''abandoned the love [they] had at first.'' Then, we studied the church at ''Smyrna'' and discovered what occurs When a Church Faces Persecution. The key phrase in that passage was ''be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.''

Pergamum is the third church out of the seven. Tonight, we'll study this subject: When A Church Remains Persistent. The key phrase in this passage is found in, ''Yet you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith...'' READ 12-17

The inland city of Pergamum lay about sixty-five miles north of Smyrna along the Caicus River. Pergamum held the official honor of being the provincial capital of Roman Asia, though this honor was in fact also claimed by Ephesus and Smyrna. Among its notable features were its beauty and wealth, its library of nearly two hundred thousand volumes (second only to the library of Alexandria); its famous sculpture; its temples to Dionysus, Athena, Aesculapius, and Demeter and the three temples to the emperor cult; its great altar to Zeus; and its many palaces. The two main religions seem to have been the worship of Dionysus, the god of the royal kings, symbolized by the bull, and Aesculapius, the god of healing, represented by the snake.

Called ''the greatest city in Asia Minor,'' Pergamum had the first temple dedicated to Caesar and was a rabid promoter of the imperial cult. This is probably what is meant by ''Satan's throne'' in verse 13. The city also had a temple dedicated to Aesculapius, the god of ...
