Intro/Attention
As we continue our study in the Book of Revelation, we come to the fifth of the ''seven churches'' in Revelation 2-3, the church in ''Sardis.'' If you will remember, we have looked at the first four churches listed in Revelation.
''Ephesus'' - When a Church Loses its Passion - ''You have abandoned the love you had at first.''
''Smyrna'' - When a Church Faces Persecution - ''Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.''
''Pergamum'' - When A Church Remains Persistent - ''Yet you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith...''
''Thyatira'' - When A Church Ignores Its Problems - ''You tolerate that woman Jezebel...''
Tonight, we come to ''Sardis.'' This was a most important city. It was about fifty miles east of Ephesus at the junction of five main roads; so it was a center for trade. It was also a military center, for it was located on an almost inaccessible plateau. The acropolis of Sardis was about 1,500 feet above the main roads, and it formed an impregnable fortress. Sardis was also known for its manufacture of woolen garments, a fact that has bearing on Christ's message to the church.
From Revelation 3:1-6 we consider what happens When a Church Forfeits God's Power. The key phrase I want you to notice in this passage is found in verse 1, ''You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.'' READ TEXT
