The Celebration of Christmas
Jerry Watts
Luke 2:1-20
This is the last Sunday before Christmas, which could be said to be, ''The most wonderful time of the year.'' That sounds like a huge celebration to me. One of my favorite Christian Christmas songs is ''Come on Ring Those Bells'', it's an old song, but I'm old. Do you know why it's a favorite? It's because of the 2nd verse which says, ''Celebrations come because of something good, there are celebrations we love to recall. Mary had a baby boy in Bethlehem. The greatest celebration of them all.''
Here's what I want to say to you, ''Even the deadest church, the most stayed church member, and the oldest person in the world, will CELEBRATE when it dawns on them what happened in Bethlehem. This is where the God-Man, God's promise, Jesus came to earth. Celebrate!
It was in the wake of the fall of man that God announced His plan of sending one who would crush the evil one. And in doing so, mankind could be restored into a full relationship with God Himself. We can never be good enough, holy enough, pure enough to do that. So we needed a savior, we needed God's promise, we needed Jesus. If we were left to our own selves, we would be doomed to a life loneliness, emptiness, and sin, with no hope of heaven which is 'no hope.' So, we needed someone to be our Savior and Lord.
This couldn't be just anyone, it could only be the perfect one. And God sent us Jesus. Jesus is our only hope, He is the reason we should celebrate. Being restored isn't about 'trying harder' or 'behavior modification,' this is about paying the price for our sin, it's about being set free from the shackles and chains of sin. Jesus left heaven, was born of a virgin, lived a life which we dream of, died for our sins, and lives today. This is our reason, motivation, and our impetus to celebrate.
