I. Introduction

Welcome to Mission Hills. I'm so glad you're here for our continuing study of the book of Daniel. Why don't you go ahead and grab your bible and make your way to Daniel 9. I've been looking forward to our time together this weekend because I think that you're going find that it's very practical. We've seen some very big-picture truths about God's sovereignty and about suffering over the last few weeks, but Daniel 9 has some very practical instruction for us about a subject that is a struggle for a lot of the followers of Jesus: prayer.

In my experience, a lot of Christians struggle with prayer. Probably more struggle with it than don't. And that can cause a lot of spiritual insecurity, frustration and guilt. But Daniel 9 can cut through all that and Daniel 9 can teach us how to pray consistently and effectively. That's the prize we have our eyes on today. So if you ever feel like you struggle to pray consistently or effectively, then you're going to be really glad that you're with us today.

Now, we're going to do something a little different today, which is that we're going to start by looking at the end of Daniel 9. This chapter has two parts, a prayer and a prophecy. The prophecy is the last part, but that's where we're going to start today. And the main reason I'm going to do that is because, honestly, I want to get it out of the way so we can focus on the prayer. There's two reasons for that: first, the prayer takes up 2/3 of the chapter, so it really feels like most of our attention should be and second, the prophecy was the answer to this prayer. So one of the questions we want to ask is, what was it about this prayer that led God to give Daniel this prophecy.
