B. Daniel's new role
Hey, why don't you go ahead and grab a bible and make your way to Daniel 10. And while you're getting there, let me tell you something you need to understand to get the most out of these last few chapters of Daniel.
Up to this point in Daniel, Daniel has basically just been Daniel. I mean, he's just been Daniel the man, Daniel the individual. But starting in Daniel 9, there's an important shift. If you were with us a few weeks ago for our look at Daniel 9, you might remember that what we saw there was primarily a prayer. And what we saw Daniel do in that prayer was to respond to God's character, focus on his glory and trust God for their good.
What we didn't talk about in Daniel 9 is that Daniel didn't just pray that prayer as an individual. If you look back at that prayer, you'll see that Daniel never says ''I'' or ''me''. He never says ''I've done this'' or ''would you do this for me?'' Instead, it's all ''we'' and ''us''...it's all ''we have done this'' and ''this is true of us.'' Instead of praying as in individual, Daniel was praying as a representative of the Jewish people.
And here's what you need to understand: that continues to be the case for the rest of the book of Daniel. Daniel is no longer just-Daniel...for the rest of the book, Daniel acts as a kind of symbolic stand-in for the Jewish people as a whole. And what that means is that what God does with Daniel is a picture of what he does with each of us. So this is not just a story of what happened to a guy...it is a revelation of how we can expect God to deal with us.
II. Main Body
A. Vision
In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a revelation was given to Daniel (who was called Belteshazzar). (Daniel 10:1a)
