The Christmas Story in a Few Words
Richard Bradley
Luke 1:31
You know how preachers are. Why say something in just a few words when we can use many? I'm sure it sometimes seems as if we preachers get paid by the word. On the other hand, sometimes it not necessary to be too wordy. Scripture is often like that. For instance, the Bible gives us a world of detail about Jesus' birth. Any preacher could preach a whole volume of sermons just on what it reveals about Jesus' birth. But there's really no reason to go into all that detail this morning. Let's keep it simple.
In Luke 1:31 we find Scripture's best short summary of the Christmas story. Here we find a concise summary of the world's most significant event; the Savior's birth. After His birth the world would never be the same.
Luke 1:31
31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.
THE MIRACLE OF CHRISTMAS IN A FEW WORDS
31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.
On the face of it, verse 31 doesn't seem that spectacular. The idea of conception and giving birth was an accepted and much anticipated part of every Jewish maiden's life. However, since Mary had never been married and was a virgin we can only imagine her confusion in the face of verse 31. In fact, this is the very question she asked Gabriel in verse 34: ''How can these things be?''
There are those who tell us that a belief in the virgin birth of Christ is not necessary for our salvation. I tell you this is not so. If we cannot trust this undeniable Scriptural truth what other biblical revelations must we mistrust? The identity of Jesus' father really does make a difference!
