I. Introduction/Background

Welcome to all our campuses, including church online. I'm so glad you're here today for the launch of our new fall series, Mission Killers. I'm so excited for this series because I think its going to be a powerful accelerator in the life of our church and in our own individual lives.

Because, for the next couple of months we're going to be walking verse by verse through a really powerful section of the book of Revelation. Now, I know a lot of people think of Revelation as this big, scary, confusing book of the Bible, but the part we're going to be looking at is pretty straightforward. Yes, there's some symbolism and some figurative imagery, but God explains most of it pretty clearly, so there's not a lot that's confusing here....but there is a lot that's challenging, because this section of Revelation is all about mission killers, all about things that have the potential to suck the purpose out of our lives and our churches.

For the next few weeks, we're going to be looking at seven letters that Jesus himself wrote to seven of his churches. But don't make the mistake of thinking that what he says in these letters is just for church leaders. It's not. It's for everyone in the church, because what is a church? A church is God's people coming together to accomplish God's purpose. A church is not a building, it's not a collection or programs. It's a collection of God's people who are coming together to accomplish God's purpose, his mission. Ok?

The letters that we're going to be looking at for the next few weeks were written to help us stay on that mission with Jesus, to avoid those mission killers that will take us off mission. But before we can talk about the things that will kill our mission, we have to answer the question of what that mission is. What is the mission of God's people, the church?
