I. Introduction

Welcome to all of our campuses. I'm glad you're back for week two of our series on Mission Killers, where we're talking about the things that can take us off mission with Jesus.

Because the moment we say yes to following Jesus, we say yes to joining him on mission. You just can't have one without the other. You can't follow Jesus without following him on mission. So the moment we say yes to Jesus, we join him on mission in the world. But the moment we join him on mission in the world, the world starts sending mission killers our way, T-1000 Terminators designed to take us off mission.

Last week we talked about a mission killer we might call Institutional Amnesia, which is the tendency of a church to forget what makes it a church. As we saw from God's word, our mission of holding the light of the Gospel up high for the lost to see...that's what makes us a church. Loving the lost, being on mission to the lost...that's not one of the things a church does, that's the one thing that makes a church a church.

Today we're going to talk about a mission killer I call the Intimidation Monster. Let's take a little survey: How many of us have ever been in a situation where there was an opportunity to speak the truth about Jesus or the Gospel or what the Bible says about something...but we found ourselves hesitant to speak up?

Ok, if you've ever been in that situation, then you've faced the Intimidation Monster. The Intimidation Monster tells us ''hey, you know what, you should just sit down and shut up, because you're way out of your league here.''

That was the mission killer facing a group of Jesus' followers in the first century in a city called Smyrna. And I think it's one that we all face in different ways.
