John 15:12-17; 20:19-23
INTRODUCTION: John 15:4-5 - [4] Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. [5] I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
This has been the theme verse we've been looking at over the last 6 weeks. This metaphor that Jesus gave us for how we grow as his disciples... How our lives can produce something of worth. How we can bear fruit.
Jesus says that if we abide in Him. If we root our lives in his love for us, then we will be overcome with joy and gratitude and it will give us power to become the person God has prepared us to be.
This is actually a very radical notion. Because many people still feel like Christianity is the opposite... If I bear enough fruit... If my life produces something of worth, then God will abide in me. But Jesus says... No... Abide in me first... Receive my love and forgiveness... Not earn it... Then your life and behavior will follow as I change you from the inside out.
This is good news for everyone of you who feels like you don't measure up... Or everyone who feels like God cannot use you because your past or current mistakes or failures.
?The message of the gospel is not... Do all these things and God will accept you... Or use you in an exciting way.
The message of the gospel is.... God has already accepted you through Christ. Forgiven you... He has given you his spirit... And now wants to empower you and release you into the world for his glory.
We are ending this study on John 15 this week... And I want us to look at two statements from Jesus that demonstrate that when we have been overwhelmed by the love of Christ it ought to shape the way that we demonstrate love and generosity toward others.
