The True Vine (1 of 6)
Series: Bear Fruit
Will McGee
John 15:1-5
''New year. New me.''
This is the popular sentiment among many Americans right now. Maybe you as well. It is a new year. You have new ambitions. New goals. But can I tell you something? You're still you. When you woke up on January 1st, nothing changed. You're still you.
Calendars can't change people. Only God can do that.
Calendars can make us reflect on our lives... They can make us aware that we need to change. But they are powerless, in and of themselves, to actually change us.
We know we need to change... This is why we make resolutions. You resolve to diet and exercise more. Because you know that you need to take better care of your body. You resolve to be more productive... You know that you need better focus. You resolve to be a better parent. Better spouse. Better student. Read more books. Make more friends. Be more informed. Learn a new language. Practice the guitar.
You recognize that there are areas of your life where growth is needed. The calendar reminds us that none of us are totally the person we want to be. Or feel like we need to be.
If you are a Christian (follower of Jesus). You realize you have areas where you need to grow spiritually. You want to read or understand more of the Bible this year. You want to understand the basics of your faith better. You want to overcome a destructive habit... Or way of thinking. You want to be more courageous in talking about your faith with your friends and family. Invite them to church. Perhaps you want to be more generous. Perhaps you want this to be the year where you really commit to making Christian friendships.
If you think you're good and no growth is needed... You need to grow in humility.
We know that we need to grow. But the question is, how? Jesus says, the answer is, ''Abide in me, and you will bear much fruit.''
