I. Introduction

Welcome to Mission Hills. I'm so glad to have you with us this weekend. We're kicking off a new series today called Travel Light. And I'm excited about this series because I really believe it has the potential to help all of us in some significant ways when it comes to dealing with some of the burdens that are weighing us down

I love this quote. It's from an unknown source, but I think it's so powerful:[unknown quote slide] I wonder how much of what weighs me down is not mine to carry? I think a lot of us are going through live weighed down by burdens we were never meant to bear...or we're bearing them in a way we were never meant to.

Today we're going to talk about one of the heaviest of those burdens: money. And before we get into what God has to say, let me be honest with you about a couple of things:

- First, as a preacher, I used to avoid teaching on money like the plague. I just think there's so much skepticism about money and the church that I wanted to stay as far away from the subject as possible. But what I've come to realize over the years is that I can't fully love the people I'm called to lead if I avoid teaching on money. Why is that? Because money exerts a tremendous influence on us. That's why money issues are one of the top causes of both divorce and anxiety. And what's interesting that that's true whether you have an excess of it or an absence of it! In fact, here's in important truth: the influence money has on us doesn't depend on the amount of money we have. And I know that because I've been on both sides of the spectrum, absence and excess, and I can tell you from personal experience that the principles and the practices Jesus teaches about money apply no matter where you are on the spectrum. And they apply equally to everyone, whether you're thinking you're on the excess side or the absence side.
