Prayer at its best in intimate, heart-to-heart communion with God, with or without words. Jarod came to his realization the day he slammed his thumb in his car door. The door was locked, his right thumb was stuck - sending frantic pain signals to his brain - and his car keys were in his right pocket. As he gingerly reached across his body with his left hand, digging for his keys, he simply whispered, ''Lord.'' Both he and God knew exactly what he needed at that moment - more words were not needed.

As John Bunyan, author of Pilgrim's Progress, in the 1600's wrote, ''The best prayers have often more groans than words.''

HE IS WITH US :26 Our weakness Likewise (NIV In the same way) - just as the Holy Spirit gives us hope for the future (:25) he gives us present hope in our lives now.

Helps - Gk. to lend a hand, to come to the aid of someone. The only other time this word is used is in Luke 10:40 where Martha says to Jesus, ''Tell her (Mary) to help me.'' She wanted Mary's assistance in preparing a meal for all of them to eat.

J.B. Philipps - ''The Spirit of God not only maintains this hope within us, but helps us in our present limitations.''

Weakness (KJB infirmities) - Gk. feeble and without strength. It is often used of physical illness such as the man who was and invalid and could not walk for 38 years (John 5:5).

Here it means: to bear trials or to suffer troubles. The word is plural meaning many different kinds of trials. I Peter 1:6 You have been grieved by various trials. Trials may be physical or emotional or spiritual. - Physical - health issues. - Emotional - anger or depression. - Spiritual - doubts and temptations. John Calvin - ''Except we are supported by God's hands, we are soon overwhelmed by innumerable evils . . . though we are weak, there is sufficient protection in God's Spirit to preserve us from being overwhelmed by many evils.''
