Love of Christ (9 of 9)
Series: Romans 8
Stephen Whitney
Romans 8:35-39
Trials can become discouraging because of the difficulties and hardship which they bring into our lives, but they do not mean Christ has withdrawn his love for us. The people of God have always suffered which reveals you are indeed a child of God.
Joseph was hated by his 10 older brothers and sold into slavery. Then he was falsely accused of sexual assault and put into prison. After asking for a favor for interpreting dreams he was forgotten. It was sometime later that he was named as Prime Minister.
J.I. Packer in Knowing God wrote, ''We should not be too taken back when unexpected and unsetting and discouraging things happen to us now. What do they mean? Why, simply that God in his wisdom means to make something of us which we have not attained yet, and is dealing with us accordingly.''
NOTHING CAN DEFEAT US :35-36 Who - Gk. also what or which. It is used of a person or a thing. Here Paul has in mind the Satan who opposes the people of God. Even though Satan is the ''prince of this world'' (John 12:31, 14:30) he will not have victory over the children of God.
Separate - Gk. to take apart what is linked together. Matthew 19:6 used of divorce between a man and his wife. What God has joined together, let not man separate.
Love of Christ - was shown in his death and his present ministry. He died so we could be forgiven and now intercedes for us (:34).
Emotional Suffering Tribulation (NIV trouble) - Gk. affliction because you are pressed down by trials. It is a general word for any kind of trouble.
Distress (NIV hardship) - Gk. a narrow or tight place. It is translated anguish and is the anxiety you feel when you are pressed by trials not knowing where to turn for relief. There doesn't seem to be an answer or solution to the situation you are facing. Troubles and hardship can wear us down so that we don't feel like continuing on, so we are ready to give up and quit.
