The Defining Moment (2 of 10)
Series: Ephesians: Unbelievable
James Merritt
Ephesians 1:13-14
Introduction
1. Psychologists refer to them as ''defining moments,'' those events in your life that shape the person you have become and you are. We all have them and I've had mine - the moment a nineteen-year-old girl got up out of a chair and turned around and over four decades, three sons, and four grandchildren later, my life was completely changed.
2. There was the moment standing in front of the post office at Stetson uNIVersity in Deland, Florida, when I received my score on the law school admission test even though I realized my life-long dream of being a lawyer could come true, God was calling me into the ministry. Two seminary degrees, five pastorates, thousands of conversions, not to mention having experiences that I never dreamed would happen, from writing books, to meeting presidents, to traveling the world, my life was completely changed. The moment I saw my first, and then second, and then third child born into this world and I took on the greatest responsibility any man can ever have which is being a dad and my life completely changed.
3. Rose Kennedy, the matriarch of the Kennedy family said, ''life is not a matter of milestones, but moments.'' think about it. When you look back on your life, the memories that stand out are moments. There are defining moments that have earthly consequences, but then there is the defining moment that has an eternal consequence. To me, it was that moment in that theater in Gainesville, Georgia, at nine years of age, when in a moment, I placed my faith and trust in Jesus Christ. I didn't realize it then, but I know it now. It was ''the'' defining moment of my life. I say that, because I didn't really understand all that just happened to me at that moment, because if I had I would have probably said one word, ''unbelievable!''
