Ephesians 5:18-21
Introduction
1. [Jody - pastor would like to have a surge protector on the podium as a prop.] I have several of these in my home and at least one in my office and I recommend that you have plenty of them as well. They are called ''surge protectors'' and their job is to protect your appliances from severe damage and can even keep your home from burning down. A power surge is a brief burst of excess electrical power that last less than one-thousandth of a second, but it can absolutely fry a refrigerator, an air-conditioner, or a computer in a blink of an eye.
2. A surge protector absorbs any excess energy and sends it to a grounding wire where the power dissipates. Now, physically and financially a power surge can be destructive and dangerous, but I believe spiritually that is exactly what we need in the church and what many individual followers of Christ need today. Let me tell you why.
3. There was a survey taken by the reveal research project and they were looking for modern day Joshua's. If you don't know who Joshua was he was a leader in the old testament, who along with Caleb, tried to persuade the nation of Israel to take the promised land that god has promised to them, but they were rejected, because Israel didn't have the faith that they had in god and the love they had for god. The result? All of Israel had to wander in the wilderness for forty-years until all the doubters died off and they could finally enter the land. So they surveyed the members of more than a thousand churches and wanted to determine the percent of churchgoers, who like Joshua, were actually propelled by their faith to love god and love others with all of their hearts. They were asking them the question, ''how many believe you are living your Christian life to the fullest? The answer? Eleven percent.
