Are You Prepared?
Jerry Watts
Luke 12:42-48
The twelfth chapter of Luke is very interesting & contains much teaching of Jesus. If you have a red-print Bible, almost the entire chapter is in red.
It begins with a warning about the ‘Leaven of the Pharisees’, which is a message for another time. This is followed by an encouragement to trust God in all things & for all things. Next, Jesus gives us that famous teaching about acknowledging Him before men & this is followed by the parable of the rich fool which leads to Luke’s rendition of Jesus’ words we read in Matthew just a few weeks ago about “Don’t Worry, Trust God.”
Beginning in verse 42 through verse 48 is literally Jesus’ teaching about being prepared for the coming of the Lord. This begs the question for us today (after celebrating THANKGIVING – that is, being thankful for all the blessings of God) – Are you ready? Better asked, “Are You Prepared?”
A large number of people love saying, “Yes, I ready to go to heaven.” We sing songs like “When the Roll is Called up yonder”, “When we all get to Heaven”, “Midnight Cry”, or “I can only imagine,” because in our sentimental minds, ‘going to’ heaven will be the same for everyone.
Honestly, when someone makes the statement, “I’m ready to go to heaven”, my knee-jerk reaction is this; “That’s great, but the larger, more important question is this, ‘Are you prepared to meet God?’” Jesus came, lived, died, arose, & ascended, not just so we can ‘go to heaven’, that is just a benefit, He came to make us right before God so that we can be prepared to meet God in eternity & then, based on that, enter His heaven.
Verses 47-48 is the payoff but we will read from verse 42 so that we can hear the full truth of Jesus. (LET’S READ IT)
