What's in a Name? The birth names of the Son of God
When a child is conceived and a pregnancy is confirmed, there are generally 3 questions immediately asked.
When is it due?
Is it a boy or a girl?
Have you selected a name?
In the case of the Lord Jesus, He was due ''in the fullness of time.'' As for His gender, He'd be the only begotten Son of God. As for His name, that's a little more involved. So for the next few lessons we are going to examine some passages that prophecy the birth of our Lord and tell us what He will be CALLED.
Isaiah 7:14 - His name shall be called Emmanuel
Matthew 1:21 - You will call His name Jesus
Luke 1:35 - He shall be called the Son of God
While each of those are names, titles, and descriptors of the Savior, few passages are more prominent at this time of year than Isaiah 9:6-7.
Hundreds of years before the Star of Bethlehem shone in the night sky, before the angels, before the shepherds, and before the sold-out hotel caused Jesus to be placed in a cattle trough, Isaiah puts an inspired quill to parchment and tells us a few of the names by which the baby Jesus would be known.
Many of you will remember the classic story told by Johnny Cash about the ''Boy named Sue.'' In the 1969 country song, ''Sue'' spent a lifetime hating his father for giving him a feminine name. Then he discovered his father named him ''Sue'' so he'd have to ''get tough or die.'' In the end, Sue finally understood why his father had given him that name.
Today we ask God, the Father, why did you name Your Son that? 740 years before He was born?

In the Hebrew language, ''to be called,'' means that the person spoken of will BE what he is CALLED. More than a surname or a proper name, the phrase indicates that these will descriptors.
