Part 3 in the Series: What's in a Name?
The birth names of the Son of God

For the last few weeks we have been looking at passages of Scripture that announce what the Christ child would be ''called.'' We looked at Isaiah 9:6 - His name shall be CALLED, ''Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Last time we noted that in Matthew 1:21 - You will call His name Jesus

Next time we will look into Luke 1:35 - He shall be called the Son of God

But today we are in Isaiah 7:14 - A virgin will conceive, give birth to a son and will call His name, Emmanuel.

Now, some of these are not really proper names as much as they are descriptions and characteristics. Until the 14th century most people had only 1 name. In medieval England, it is estimated that, 3 out of every 5 men carried the name Henry, Robert, John, William or Richard. As cities grew so did the need to further identify people with a last name. Last names were often derived from occupations, such as Miller, Baker, or Smith.
