21 Once more Jesus said to them, ''I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.'' (John 8:21)

This is actually a statement that Jesus repeats several times in the Gospel of John. And every time he says it, it has at least three elements. Sometimes there are some additional elements, but it always has at least these three: I am going away, you will look for me and you can't get to where I'm going.

1. Going away - The first thing he says is ''I'm going away.'' The way he says it is interesting because he doesn't say ''I will go away someday''. Literally what he says is ''I depart''. There's a sense of urgency to it, like the train's already pulling out of the station. And I think the reason for that is that he's communicating a sense of urgency, that time is short. That the people who are listening to him, whether that was there in person, or right here, right now as we read his words, need to understand that There's a clock running on our time to figure out what we believe about Jesus.

2. Look for me - The second thing he says is ''you will look for me.'' Now, what's interesting is that when he says this to people who don't believe in him, he says they'll look for him and not find be able to find him. Here, he says ''you will look for me and you will die in your sins'', which is another way of saying ''you won't find me'' because their sins will keep them out of the place he's going. But...when he's talking to those who believe in him, like in John 13:33 he says ''you will look for me'' but he doesn't say that they won't find him. Because they will. Those who believe in Jesus will eventually go to the place where he is, to heaven. It is our faith in Jesus that determines whether or not we will find him in the end.
