Trust Issues (6 of 10)
Series: Real Jesus
Craig Smith
John10:11-21
Big Idea: Jesus has earned our trust with a no-holds barred love.
I. Introduction
Welcome to Mission Hills. I'm so glad you're here, but I'm frustrated that, once again, we're coming to church after a week where horrific things have happened in our country. The most recent school shooting in Florida stirs up all kinds of emotions and I imagine every one of us has wrestled with those emotions in different ways this week.
Let's take a moment to pray...[prayer]
You know, things like this most recent school shooting cause us to ask all kinds of questions. One of the questions that I hear most frequently, given what I do, is the question, why would a good God allow this kind of thing to happen?
One of the things I've come to understand is that, every time I hear that question, there's really another, even more important question hiding in the background. And that question is this: can I really trust God?
Because that's the essence of faith, right? Faith is the choice to trust that God can and will accomplish the good we cannot.
But let's be honest, trust is hard. It's always hard, whether we're talking about trusting God, or trusting another human being. We have trust issues. And there are lots of reasons we have trust issues, but one of the most common reason is that trusting others has often led to hurt. Many of you here today can immediately think of experiences you've had where trusting someone has not worked out well at all. And those experiences become the lens through which we view everything when it comes to trust. So the call to trust God falls on cynical, hearts that say ''I've tried trust. Look where it got me. Why should trusting God be any different?''
And I think Jesus has an answer to that question. Why don't you grab a bible and turn with me to John 10:11 so we can look at it together.
