Palm Sunday (10 of 10)
Series: Real Jesus
Craig Smith
John 12:12-19
Big Idea: If you see something, say something
I. Introduction
Hey, welcome to Mission Hills on this Palm Sunday weekend. And if you have no idea what that means, don't worry, that's cool. Here's what it means: About two thousand years ago, on the Sunday before what we now call Easter, Jesus arrived at the city of Jerusalem for the last time. Now, on his way into town, a big crowd of people met him and welcomed him by waving branches from Palm trees. So there you go. That's why we call it Palm Sunday. Mystery solved.
But the really interesting question about Palm Sunday isn't why we call it tha.t..or even why they greeted Jesus in that particular way (we'll get to that in a second). The more interesting question about Palm Sunday is something that John says in chapter 12, verse 12. I'd love for you to grab a Bible so we can look at that together.
II. Main Body
A. The Triumphal Entry

What he means is that what he's about to describe took place the next day after the stuff we looked at last weekend, where we saw that when we reject selfishness and choose sacrifice, powerful things begin to happen. Great message from Pastor Kip. If you didn't get a chance to hear it, I'd strongly encourage you to listen to it on the church website or through the Mission Hills app or on any of the major podcast platforms. And now John says:
12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. (John 12:12)
Ok, the festival he's talking about is the Passover festival, one of the major Jewish holidays when they celebrated the time that God set them free from slavery in Egypt. During this time of year, Jerusalem would have been filled to capacity with people who came into town for the celebration, kind of like Times Square on New Year's Eve. So ther ...
