Can I Have Your Attention (2 of 2)
Series: Praying With Fire
Craig Smith
Matthew 6:7
I. Introduction
Welcome to all our campuses. I'm really glad to have you back for part two of our summer mini-series praying with fire. Today we're going to be taking a look at is probably the most famous prayer in the whole Bible, the Lord's prayer.
This is a prayer that Jesus taught to his first followers and it has become a prayer that the followers of Jesus have looked to over and over again throughout the centuries.
Now before we get into this prayer, let me tell you what we're trying to do today. We're on a treasure hunt, and what we're searching for is the heart of the Lord's prayer. Over the years, a lot of people have used the Lord's prayer as a way of developing a sort of pattern for their own prayer lives. And there's nothing wrong with that. The Lord's prayer can teach us a lot about the sort of things we should pray about.
But in my opinion, The Lord's prayer is meant to teach us an attitude, not a strategy. As we'll see in just a second, when Jesus taught the Lord's Prayer, he said ''this is how you should pray.'' But ''how'' you should pray isn't so much ''follow this pattern'' as it is ''come to God with this attitude.''
And again, let me be clear: there's nothing wrong with finding and following patterns in the Lord's prayer. But what we're going to focus on today is this attitude that Jesus says should be behind all prayers, regardless of what pattern the actual prayer follows.
Why don't you go ahead and grab a Bible and make your way to Matthew 6:7
II. Main Body
A. Do Not Babble On
Now, so far Jesus has told us that prayer should be a regular part of our lives, that it should be directed to God and God alone and that when we pray to an audience of One, we get to enjoy our Father's undivided attention.
Now he's going to tell us a little bit more about how to actually pray:
