The Performer (2 of 3)
Series: Reckless
Craig Smith
Luke 15: 25-30
Introduction
Welcome to all our campuses, including church online. I'm so glad you're here for part two of our Reckless mini-series where we're doing a deep-dive on one of the most famous parables that Jesus taught, often called the parable of The Prodigal Son. Last week we looked at the Prodigal...at the youngest son who was reckless with his resources and his relationships. He was driven by self-indulgence which led him to act in self-destructive ways.
When the prodigal realized that he'd hit rock bottom, he came up with a plan to earn back his father's acceptance. He was filled with self-loathing and he had come up with a plan to make it right. But before he could even get home, his father saw him coming and ran to meet him, to welcome him, to accept him. And the Prodigal tried to tell his dad how guilty he felt, but his dad cut him off and started planning a party because his son had come home. And Jesus wanted us to understand something important about God from that story, which is that God is waiting on the front porch for the first sign that we're ready to come home.
And that's great news for anyone who relates to the Prodigal son, for anyone who has come to grips with the fact that they've been driven by self-indulgence, for anyone who recognizes that they're far from home, far from God.
But the thing is, not everyone who is far from God knows that they're far from God.
Why don't you go ahead and grab a Bible and make your way to Luke 15? Let's see the rest of this story Jesus told. Because in spite of the fact that we often call this the story of the Prodigal son, the fact is, there's another brother in this story...and he is an equally important part of what Jesus is saying. We'll be picking up in verse 25.
