Psalm 23: 1-4
1 A Psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. 3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever. (NKJV)
Psalm 23 is a song written by David. It is perhaps the most beloved Psalm of all the 150 Psalms, and the one that is used at more funerals than any other scripture verse. Psalm 23 brings comfort, peace, and hope to those that put their faith in the verses. It reassures believers of God’s protection, His love for them, and His faithfulness in caring for them. To receive what Psalm 23 promises us, we must first understand who we are, and who the Shepherd is.
Psalm 100:1 A Psalm of Thanksgiving. Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! 2 Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. 3 Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. (NKJV)
Throughout the scriptures, we see the typology of the shepherd and the sheep. The main reference has been God being the Shepherd and Israel being the sheep. Even David himself who wrote Psalm 23 was a shepherd tending his father Jesse’s sheep. He understood what it meant to be a shepherd and he referred to God as being our Shepherd.
As New Testament Believers in Jesus, we read Psalm 23 as Jesus being the Good Shepherd and us as being the sheep of His pasture.
