Psalm 23: 5
Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever. (ESV)
Before we dig into the message today, we must understand who's who. If we say, ''The LORD is my shepherd,'' then I am His sheep.
Today, we will center in on that portion of vs 5 which reads, ''You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.''
The shepherd would pour oil and rub oil into the skin, scalp, ears, and noses of the sheep for several reasons. It conditioned their skin, it got rid of any bugs, pests and parasites that were seeking to infest. One was a nose fly that would get up into the nose of the sheep and lay eggs that would hatch as worms. This would torture the sheep and they would bang their heads against trees or lose their desire to eat. Some would even go blind as a result. One parasitic disease forms a scab that spreads throughout the sheep's body and is highly contagious. It is spread from sheep to sheep, so the shepherd must pour oil on the scabs to bring healing to the sheep.
So, if the LORD is my shepherd, and I am His sheep, how does this Word apply to me? (I am sure that is the question you are asking yourself!) What is the spiritual application of the oil? What is the anointing mean? Let's look at the Scriptures.
