Big Idea: We need God's Word to be our true north and we need each other on this journey.
Intro: Growing up living near woods, we learned how to use a compass. This was helpful as we hunted, played hide and seek, and played paintball. Knowing how to use a compass was very helpful when we were deep in the woods. When you're a kid every tree is big and you feel small when you think you're lost.
Then technology advanced with GPS in smart phones and vehicles. Having Global Positioning System in your hand is much different than having a compass...when it works. Early on in our marriage we lived in PA, we traveled around to know the area. Most people who became our friends lived out in the country. One time we made the mistake to wait to leave after the sun went down. Just say that the iPhone went down, the Rand McNally was no longer in the car, no compass, and there was an intense disagreement that I know where I was going.
Ever been there?
Without a true north, our anxiety ramps up and we feel lost. Life feels out of control. A true north brings peace and clarity.
Tension: It's no secret that people are attending church less and less. Even some in this room are attending less and less.
Our friend has put a list together of reasons why people attend less and less-even those who we'd consider committed church goers. Affluence People have more money to spend (the middle class is shrinking because some are becoming upper class...especially in NOVA) Kids' Activities Travel sports Travel (RV, lake, beach, mountains)
Lack of access to a car Blended family but no access to go to church because they don't go to church One vehicle family for a short time Online church Culture guilt is gone
In the 80s and 90s, there was guilt...you felt bad for not being in church when you saw those at the restaurant in church clothes Vice versa...people questioned why you weren ...
