Controlling Yourself (2 of 4)
Series: Start Over
Jeff Geyer
Judges 6
Intro: We all have regrets we wish we could go back and change. Maybe we want to hit the reset button on our relationships, health, and plans. Maybe there are decisions we wish we could do over. Maybe it's a target weight, target amount of money in the bank, relational status, or an area of your life that we would all say, ''I've lost some faith, missed out, and even messed up. I'm ready to start over.'' We can't go back and undo our past, but with Jesus we can start over.
Last week we looked at the greatest obstacle to us getting to where it is that God wants us to be affects all of us. The greatest obstacle for all of us is how we see ourselves. It's how you see you. It's how I see me. It's our past that we cannot get past. Things we've done to ourselves in action or reaction.
This week we'll see that as we start over there will be things out of our control and things under our control. I've noticed that the people I look up to the most, I realize that I'm only a few decisions away from getting to where they are. The difference between them and me is the discipline they've used to make those decisions. We find ourselves ready to start over because we couldn't control ourselves.
Tension: When you look back on the regrets of the past, we realize that the problem was us. I just couldn't help myself. I couldn't control myself. That's why I ate so much. That's why I spent so much. That's why I said too much. That's why I got too mad. I couldn't control me.
Grandfather's allergic reaction to Narco: Knee replacement surgery a couple weeks ago He had an allergic reaction to Narco, which was a narcotic to help with the pain He went on a ''trip'' for a couple days (didn't know where he was, thought he was going into surgery) He said, ''I couldn't control myself.'' I remember thinking that his pain was controlled while he was out of control.
