Big Idea: A great married life exists with understanding marriage as a gift from God for His purposes.
Intro: There are many assumptions and expectations about being married: ''Marriage means that I won't be alone.'' ''Common interests will keep us together.'' ''We'll have sex anytime we want.'' ''We'll have kids.'' ''We'll never go to bed angry.'' ''Couples therapy/counseling is for fixing a broken marriage.'' ''Marriages benefit from a relationship contract.''
Over the next twenty minutes or so, we'll see that these are assumptions and expectations. The statements mentioned are often said by those who have watched too many romantic comedies on Hallmark.
Without a doubt, there is pain, hurt, and uncertainty for many married people. Never thought you'd be lonely and feel alone Never thought you'd have infertility Wish you could go to bed happy Wish you would have tried counseling before it got too far Never expected to be separated at 40 Never expected to be receiving a text from the person their spouse had an affair with Never expected to sit the kids down and walk through arrangements on when they'll be able to pick them up on the weekends during the separation Uncertain on how to handle your spouses PTSD Grief of saying goodbye to your spouse after 50 years
I'm going into this message understanding that we have most in our church are married. I'm aware that being married in your 20s is different than being married in your 30s, 40s, and 60s. I'm also aware that being married has different challenges than being married with kids.
I want to be helpful-giving helpful information and context to how God views marriage I want to be honest-giving honest application on how all of us can move forward with marriage as a good thing in our church and even in our culture
