Proverbs 16:18

I. Introduction

Welcome to Mission Hills and to week number three of our series, Potholes, where we're on a search for wisdom from the book of Proverbs so we can identify and avoid some of most destructive holes we encounter on the road of life. Today, we're going to tackle the pothole of pride.

Now let me just say that this is a little bit of a tricky because we use the word ''pride'' in several different ways.

- First, we sometimes talk about school pride or national pride or Bronco pride...and what we mean by that is something like a sense of belonging, of community. We're not going to talk about that kind of pride today.

Here's what we mean by that: pride is an over-valuing of self and an under-valuing of others. Pride says ''I'm all I need''. It doesn't necessarily say ''I'm the best at everything'' but it tends to say ''what I'm not the best at doesn't really matter all that much. I think we have this tendency to think that prideful people think that they're the best ...
